In the Book of Revelation 6:1-8, it is said that God has a scroll in his right hand that is covered in seven seals. When broken by the Lamb of God, the first four seals release the four horsemen of the apocalypse: pestilence, war, famine, and death.
The story, in its most basic form, is one we’ve heard before: the apocalypse is coming, and its four horsemen have been released to rain havoc and destruction upon the Earth. The fleshed-out tale is, however, quite different.
In Simon Bisley and Michael Mendheim’s graphic novel The Four Horsemen of the Apocalypse, the seals are broken not by the Lamb of God, but by a group of heretics that call themselves the Nicolaitans. These seals are not located on a scroll but are instead protected by the members of the Order of Solomon. Under the orders of a demon, the Nicolaitans go on a murderous rampage, killing all holders of the seals in order to steal them, break them, and release the four horsemen to rage across the Earth....

There have been all sorts of interpretations when it comes to the various aspects of the Bible. It's safe to say that the coolest ones have to do with Revelations and the Four Horsemen of the Apocalypse. Michael Mendheim seems to agree as he's created his own take on the horsemen in an epic, world-ending saga that has been collected in one big hardcover by Titan Comics.
Titled simply The Four Horsemen of the Apocalypse, the comic centers on Adam Cahill, a member of the Order of Solomon, an ancient bloodline sworn to protect the seven seals of Hell. When a dark force begins attacking the Order and breaking the seals, Adam must make the ultimate sacrifice and venture into the underworld to protect the planet from Armageddon. He's joined by three lost souls to stop the Horsemen before they can lay waste to the world. No pressure.
"It seems I've been lucky enough to cross artistic paths with Simon Bisley more then once. Working at DC on L.E.G.I.O.N '89 I worked on the issues that introduced Lobo to the book and later into prominence buoyed by Simon Bisley's work on Lobo. The better of the connections was during my run on Doom Patrol in which Bisley graced many of the covers of the books I worked on. I was happy with my run on the book, however short it was, but I was even more proud of the book because of the beautifully imagined paintings that Bisley created for the book. There was a time that I lost track of Bisley's work although I knew he had worked at Mirage Studios for some years and now I see he's about to re-emerge in a big way... The Four Horsemen book appears to, not only reinforce the vibrancy and power in his work, but will create an all new following of Bisley fans for years to come!"
Having worked with Michael Mendheim on several video games prior to Four Horsemen of the Apocalypse, I knew it was something straight from his heart. Unfortunately I left the company we were at just before pre-production on Four Horsemen began, so wasn’t involved those exciting days of concept and character development, with Simon, Rusty, Dave Devries, Doug Chiang, etc. I was excited to come back on board later, as Michael decided to flesh out the project as a full-blown epic graphic novel. There were areas of the original game plot that didn’t lend themselves so well to a linear, thought-provoking character drama, so we had a lot of fun re-tooling bits of the plot, character backstories, and story arc into something that really embraced the concept of Redemption. At that point, it had evolved into something almost brand new, with scores of new ideas and directions folded into the original inspiration to make it fresh and relevant all over again. Producing and directing the CG tr...
You know the basics behind the Horsemen. Death, Pestilance, War, and Famine will ride forth upon the world when the seven seals holding them at bay are broken. In the world of Helldiver, these seals are protected by an ancient order from the Vatican. Each one is protected by a soldier. The story focuses on Adam Cahill, a descendant of the bloodline of Solomon, who is called into action to help protect the seals at all costs from the Nicolaitans. And costs there are. Saving mankind is not something that you can just do. It takes sacrifice and even though Cahill has dedicated his life to the cause, that's still not enough.
If by some strange chance you're unfamiliar with the “Heavy Metal” brand, the first thing you should know about Helldiver is that it's full of gore and nudity, both gratuitous and exaggerated. Let's put it this way: this isn't one you're going to want to read on the bus or subway. Helldiver's story also rides steady in the realm of “pure bad***ery,” so don't expect any revelatory literary experiences. Do expect: demons, swords, guns, and a High Archon of the Order of Solomon with a black trench coat (stylistically reminiscent of Spawn's cape) who uses the aforementioned lethal implements to dispatch many of the aforementioned demons. It's a fun experience, to be sure, as long as you know what you're getting into.
“The End is Here – Welcome to the Apocalypse! Raised by the Order of Solomon, Adam Cahill is one of a rare handful of highly trained warriors bound by bloodline to guard the Seven Holy Seals that contain the End of Days. But ageless forces have conspired toward a prophetic event foretold by numerous cultures and multiple religions, and when that cryptic date arrives, they strike against the order without mercy! Adam’s world is shattered, his family murdered, and he is sent spiraling into Hell itself. There, he must find three corrupt souls, chosen by Divinity, to join him in battle against the legendary Horsemen of the Apocalypse. These broken individuals must band together to not only save their own souls but decide the fate of Humanity.”
